Hey John. To answer your question, yes, exercise can be beneficial for MG to improve cardio and stave off muscular atrophy. But…..you need to take it real slowly! If you remember your old geometry/trig classes from high school math: exercise with MG is like an inverse parabola. Gradual increases in intensity improve things until you reach the top of the curve. And then, additional intensity will provoke a fatigue and weakness MG response. And of course, this parabola looks different for each individual, so you have to discover your own. AND REMAIN PATIENT! Good luck brother!

I’m in my first 2 weeks out from my diagnosis I will see my neurologist for the second time and first since I started my meds I pray he has plans for bigger treatments and trials. I’m a fighter and I plan to enter this fight against this disease and earn my warriors crown.

What a journey — six years of piecing together a puzzle that finally has a name. The fact that Mestinon brought noticeable relief so quickly is actually a really encouraging sign for your path forward.

What a journey — six years of piecing together a puzzle that finally has a name. The fact that Mestinon brought noticeable relief so quickly is actually a really encouraging sign for your path forward.

Getting back to an exercise routine with gMG is absolutely possible, though it will look different than your previous 3-hour sessions — at least for now. The key is working *with* your body rather than pushing through it. Here are some general principles that tend to help people with MG stay active safely:

- Start small — short, low-intensity sessions and build gradually
- Time workouts wisely — exercise when you feel strongest, often earlier in the day
- Rest is part of the plan — build rest periods into every session
- Track your energy — note what drains you and share that with your neurologist
- Always consult your doctor before starting or changing any exercise routine

Fatigue with MG isn't ordinary tiredness — muscles simply require far more effort because of how MG affects nerve-to-muscle communication. Overdoing it can trigger symptom flares. The good news is that treatments beyond Mestinon and prednisone do exist, and many people find combinations that significantly improve their quality of life. As one MGteam member shared, IVIG treatments "completely changed my life" after years of searching for answers.

Your neurologist, Dr. Cherry, sounds like a strong advocate — keeping that open conversation going about next treatment steps will be key to getting you back to the gym. 💪
