With MG, the muscles that control breathing are already potentially compromised. If your airways are also inflamed or constricted, your body has to work even harder to breathe, which could increase the risk of a crisis. Warning signs that a myasthenic crisis may be developing include:

- Shortness of breath
- Increased difficulty swallowing
- Increased muscle weakness
- Sleep apnea

If you notice any of these worsening — especially during a flare-up — reach out to your doctor or care team right away. Don't wait it out.

It's also worth noting that some medications used to treat respiratory issues can interact with MG, so always check with your neurologist before starting any new medication.
