I gained a lot of weight since diagnosis a few years ago. Several factors. Prednisone, depression, inability to exercise due to fatigue and the heat. I moved to SC five years ago, from NC. Even though it’s really not that far (2 hours by car) it’s way hotter and more humid here. I live within 30 minutes of Myrtle Beach and I’m guessing the ocean has something to do with the humidity? It wipes me out, Really badly. I have fibromyalgia also, so that doesn’t help the fatigue. I’m think the meds from depression are a factor in my fatigue also, which makes me just sit around the house more. I’m a full 90 pound heavier now.

Weight gain is a well-known and very common side effect of prednisone (corticosteroids), so what's being experienced is not unusual at all. Prednisone can affect how the body processes sugar and fat, which often leads to weight gain.
While weight gain itself isn't always listed as a standalone side effect, prednisone is known to cause several related issues, including:
- Increased blood sugar levels
- Changes in how fat is stored in the body
- Fluid retention The good news is that long-term steroid use is something many MG specialists actively work to minimize over time, partly because of side effects like these. Some people with gMG eventually explore other treatment options that can reduce reliance on steroids.
It's really worth bringing this up with the treating doctor or MG specialist. They can review the current dosage and discuss whether adjustments or additional treatments might help manage both the gMG symptoms and the side effects being experienced.
