I love fountain drink Diet Coke and it seems to make my stomach feel better when it is bothering me. Is it bad for my MG? I usually limit myself to one a day..

I would love a regular coke or ginger ale- I don’t like the aftertaste of Diet Coke.

Is one Diet Coke a day bad for myasthenia gravis? That's a great question, and the good news is that one a day is a pretty moderate amount!

Diet Coke does contain caffeine, which has a complicated relationship with MG. On the positive side, caffeine may help boost acetylcholine levels — the neurotransmitter that MG affects. This could potentially offer some mild benefit, similar to how some MG medications work. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

- Hydration — Caffeine can be dehydrating, so balancing it with plenty of water is important
- Sodium — Fountain drinks can be higher in sodium, which may worsen fluid retention, especially if steroids are part of your treatment
- Timing — Avoid having it too late in the day to protect sleep quality
- Cholinesterase inhibitors — If you take this type of medication, discuss caffeine intake with your doctor, as there's a small risk of worsening a cholinergic crisis

One MGteam member shared a similar love-hate relationship with caffeine, noting it helps with fatigue but has its downsides too.

One Diet Coke a day is generally considered moderate, but it's always worth mentioning to your doctor, especially regarding your specific medications.
