It's worth asking: which myasthenia gravis symptoms might lead to a misdiagnosis, and why can MG be tricky to identify?

MG can mimic several other conditions because its symptoms — like muscle weakness, vision changes, and breathing difficulties — overlap with many other diagnoses. This is why doctors use a process called "differential diagnosis" to rule out other causes before confirming MG. Some commonly confused or overlapping symptoms include:

- Drooping eyelids and double vision — often the first signs of MG, but can be mistaken for other eye-related conditions
- Muscle weakness — affects arms, legs, neck, and face, and can worsen with activity
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking — affects roughly 15% of people at diagnosis
- Breathing difficulties — the most serious symptom, which can escalate to a myasthenic crisis requiring emergency care
- Fatigue — described by one MGteam member as "debilitating... my muscles have melted away"

Getting the right diagnosis takes time, so it's important to keep detailed notes on your symptoms — especially when they worsen — and share them with your doctor.

I get headaches and fall asleep right after treatments. Guess the steroids kick in and I have been up for as long as 36 hours. Before treatments you’ll take pre meds, 2 Tylenol and a Benadryl. Before sure to drink a lot of water or you’ll feel worse. We don’t want that to happen!! Good luck, God bless you 🙏🙏🫶♥️🫶

Hi Katherine. I see you mentioned most of your IVIG. I’m going for IVIG next week for five days. How frequent did you go for IVIG and any side effects encountered during the treatment?

I would see another Dr. ASAP! That’s ridiculous!! Did you feel better on mestinon/pyrofistymine? Shame on your Dr.! You know your body. I had a muscle biopsy to remove all doubt. This particular test shows 4 things. The Dr. eliminates 3 he knows you don’t have, that’s how insurance pays for most of my IVIG. Good luck. Ask when you seek out a new Dr. if they care for many MG patients so you can be sure they’re knowledgeable. 🙏🙏🤗🌹
