Are you experiencing breathing problems with myasthenia gravis? This is a really important topic to understand, because MG can weaken the muscles needed to breathe, making it feel shallow, labored, or exhausting β especially during activity or illness.
One MGteam member shared: "Sometimes I get short of breath unexpectedly, but usually I'm tired, have a slight cold or virus, or have had an extra stressful day." Another noted: "My problem has been the muscles around my lungs." When to seek help immediately:
Breathing symptoms should always be taken seriously. If breathing becomes severely limited, call emergency services right away. Shortness of breath can be a sign of a myasthenic crisis β a life-threatening emergency where the respiratory muscles can't move enough air in and out on their own.
Between 10β20% of people with generalized MG will experience a myasthenic crisis at least once, and it requires immediate medical treatment. For milder breathlessness, some helpful techniques include:
- Box breathing β Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, wait for 4, then repeat
- Belly breathing β Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest, and focus on breathing deeply into your belly
These are useful for day-to-day management, but are not a substitute for medical care if you're struggling to breathe. Contact your neurology team right away if shortness of breath worsens or feels serious.
