Members responded to a question about whether Mestinon causes a runny nose and cough, with many confirming these as common side effects they experience too. Several members shared practical ways they manage the symptoms, including over-the-counter nasal spray, carrying tissues, and a homeopathic allergy drop found at Allergena.com, while one member noted their cough turned out to be coughing asthma. A recurring theme was the importance of checking in with a neurologist, as some members noted their doctor mentioned these side effects early on and that switching medications is sometimes an option.

Are you new to mestinon, or has this been going on all along ? I dont experience the runny nose. But I am on a Homeopathic drop for the many allergens, here in my home state. If you think it may be allergy related ? You might want to look up www.Allergena.com this stuff saved my a$$ after moving from Arizona back to Ohio.

Yes, a runny nose and cough can be related to Mestinon (pyridostigmine). One known side effect of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors like Mestinon is increased mucus production, which can contribute to these annoying symptoms.

This happens because Mestinon works by boosting acetylcholine levels in the body — and that same mechanism can also stimulate mucus glands, leading to a runny nose, excess secretions, and coughing. Here are some general recommendations worth discussing with your doctor:

- Talk to your MG specialist about whether your current Mestinon dose might be contributing — sometimes adjusting the dose can help reduce these side effects
- Ask about antihistamines — but check with your doctor first, as some medications can interact with MG treatments or even worsen symptoms
- Make sure all your doctors and pharmacist know you have MG so they can help find safe options to manage side effects

It's always best to loop in your neurologist or MG specialist before trying anything new, even over-the-counter remedies. What works for one person may not be right for another!
