I had 3 lower front teeth with chucks out of them. It can be internal or external. My dentist had 9 patients that had this. It affects people like us with auto immune issues. Another dentist told me it was an inflammatory disease and like MG is rare. I got one repaired by the dentist & avoided a root canal. The other two need ed root canals and gum surgery as they pushed the gums down and tried a coating on them. I had to see not only the dentist but the endodontist and a periodontist and it… read more

Marcie, I don't have dental insurance. Most insurance just covers basic 2 cleanings a year and an visit with a percentage of work needed. We went on line and found a thing not called insurance because you can't have more than one insurance. It was Delta dental I believe, "patient direct." You pay a small amount each month, and it is like a membership. I found an endodontist and a periodontist that took this coverage and they charged a certain amount that was less than the normal charge for these members. It really saved me thousands of dollars between both my providers and also the dentist in that practice that carried this coverage/ membership. I pay a discounted fee for my cleaning and some dental work so far. You can sign up for it and cancel whenever but I chose to stay because I can buy some dental insurance with it if I want. My first dentist had dental insurance but they did not take patient direct membership coverage. The other dentist I see now is in a group of dentists in 5 different places around a few cities here. The specialists (endodontist and periodontist) go 1 day in each facility. For me, I was willing to drive a few towns away to get in sooner, but then I asked one of their nurse/hygienists or P.A. whatever and they told me which doctor they took their own families to and that dentist was closest to me so I scheduled there.

This is new to me. Never heard of it. I wonder what med those 6 people were on that caused their issue?

What a challenging situation to be dealing with on top of managing MG — that's a lot to handle, both physically and financially.

Tooth resorption in people with autoimmune conditions like MG isn't widely studied, but the connection makes sense. MG involves the immune system mistakenly attacking the body's own tissues, and that same inflammatory process could potentially affect other areas, including dental health.

A few things worth knowing:

- Chronic inflammation, which is common with autoimmune conditions, is linked to a range of secondary health issues
- Some immunosuppressant medications used for MG can have side effects that affect oral health
- Since you're on Cellcept (mycophenolate), it's worth specifically asking your neurologist whether it could be playing any role

The observation your dentist made about 6 patients being on the same drug is genuinely interesting and worth raising with your MG specialist directly.

Practically speaking, the every-3-month cleaning schedule your dentist recommended sounds like a smart protective step. Keeping inflammation in the mouth as low as possible may help reduce recurrence risk.

It would be worth posting this question in your MGteam feed — given how uniquely MG presents in everyone, another member may have experienced something similar and could share what helped them.

I have MG and take Mycophenolate as well as prednisone and I’ve had a lot of problems with my teeth ,it has cost thousands despite having some dental cover in my insurance, part of my problem is that I have such high anxiety levels I clamp my teeth together an and grind at night sometimes (according to husband)
I didn’t know there was a connection with MG but now that it has been mentioned,I’m wondering about that.
