Are frequent chest infections and shortness of breath (SOB) a common experience for people with MG? Unfortunately, yes — and you're definitely not alone in this.
MG can weaken the muscles involved in breathing, making it feel shallow, labored, or exhausting — especially during illness. This can make the lungs more vulnerable to infections.
One MGteam member shared: "My problem has been the muscles around my lungs." Infections are also a well-known trigger for MG flares and can even lead to a myasthenic crisis in serious cases, so it's really important to take them seriously and act quickly when symptoms appear.
To help reduce the risk of infections, some helpful steps include:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Wearing a face mask in crowded or enclosed spaces
- Avoiding sharing food or drinks
- Staying up to date on vaccinations (always check with your MG specialist first, especially if you're on immunosuppressive therapy)
Monthly chest infections are worth flagging urgently with your neurologist or MG specialist — that frequency is not something to push through alone. 💙
