Great question — and totally understandable to feel confused! The short answer is: dairy isn't a blanket "yes" or "no." It really depends on the specific food and your personal situation.

Here's a helpful breakdown: Dairy that tends to be well-tolerated:
- Yogurt — soft, easy to swallow, great for gut health, and supports bone strength (important if you're on steroids long-term)
- Eggs — soft, protein-packed, and nutritious (technically not dairy but often grouped together)
- Cheese and cottage cheese — lower in lactose than milk, generally easier to digest

Where caution comes in:
- Regular milk — it's thin in consistency, which can make swallowing harder and riskier for some people with MG
- High-sodium dairy products — can worsen water retention, especially if you're on steroids So the concern isn't really about dairy as a whole — it's more about texture and sodium content. Thicker dairy foods like yogurt and cottage cheese are generally considered good options.

As always, checking in with your neurologist or a registered dietitian is the best way to tailor this to your specific needs and medications.

Good morning beautiful Carol. I have eaten and drank all of that and no problem so far. Those are the things I did before this gMG and didn't think about it. I take prednisone but I take a water pill because I have high blood pressure. Girl you know I'm crazy and test myself first and if i pass out I taught my cat to call 911😂🤣. I tell my neurologist everything he laughs and then I do what he says🥰. Baby always do what your Dr says, do not follow me that would not be good for you😍. Let's all drink our coffee, good morning family, Meta

I am lactose intolerant and have been for over 10 yrs. I do however buy dairy that is lactose free. The other side to that coin is because dairy products, lactose free or not, are animal products that have fat and cholesterol. So whether or not you tolerate dairy (which can cause intestinal distress if lactose intolerant) if inactive, you may experience weight gain. Since I am lactose intolerant, and have intestinal distress with the Pyridostigmine alone, I do not consume regular dairy or even lactose free dairy very often. I have read that dairy may contribute to the onset of diabetes (another auto immune disease which those of us know if you have 1 auto immune you have a higher chance of developing another auto immune disease).

I have stopped all dairy (from cows) except for cheeses. I enjoy almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and Meyenberg goat milk (not the powdered version). The plain almond milk is indistinguishable from cow's milk in almost every way. My daughter enjoys chocolate almond milk. All of them except the oat milk last well beyond their expiration dates. I have found that oat milk goes bad by the expiration date. None of these bother my gMG.
