Great question — and the short answer is: not usually right away. Both a flare-up and a myasthenic crisis tend to give some warning signs before things get serious.
With a myasthenic crisis, you'll often notice gradually worsening symptoms beforehand, such as:
- Increasing muscle weakness
- Shortness of breath

HI Carol. I'm not sure about flare-ups. But today here in California it was 91 degrees. Was running errands with husband. After 2nd stop he went into grocery store. The heat tired me. I'm sorry about your accident. Yes it is stressful and trying to buy a car. 🤦will say prayer for easy outcome for you.
My flares happen fairly fast. Energy seems to leave me. Usually have to rest. Pyridostigmine (mestinon) helps to get legs moving when weak. Take care
My husband's crisis came on slowly, was hospitalized for about 1 week and with Prednisone (at that time) improved. His was muscle related and he fell and could not stand back up for about 10 minutes (he was working at the time), next day headed out the Mayo Clinic and his neurologist.
I had two crisis in a row about 30 seconds apart while in the hospital. No warning.
Gasping for air until I decided to try shallow breathing. Shallow breathing worked and let me settle and relax. Very frightening.
