Members connected over the question of whether MG makes eyes more prone to other problems, with many sharing that blurry vision, eye fatigue, watering, and double vision are common daily struggles. Several members described practical workarounds like keeping multiple pairs of reading glasses on hand, resting their eyes regularly, and staying on a consistent medication dosing routine to manage double vision. A recurring theme was the added concern about long-term treatments like prednisone, with one member sharing they developed cataracts requiring surgery after nearly two years on the medication.

MGTEAM says:
MG itself doesn't directly cause additional eye diseases or make your eyes more vulnerable to other conditions. The condition weakens the muscles that control eye movement and eyelid position, but it doesn't damage the optic nerve or retina, which are essential for vision.

However, some MG treatments can lead to eye complications over time. Long-term use of corticosteroids like prednisone may increase the risk of developing cataracts (cloudy areas on the lens) or glaucoma (pressure buildup inside the eye). This is why regular eye exams are important when living with MG.

Additionally, if you're taking hydroxychloroquine for a comorbid condition like lupus, this medication may cause eye problems or worsen MG symptoms.

The eye symptoms you experience from MG—like double vision, droopy eyelids, or blurred vision—are due to muscle weakness rather than damage to the eye itself. These symptoms can fluctuate throughout the day and often improve with rest.

My eyes tire quickly from ready abd get blurry. They also twitch from time to time.

After reading, focusing on a task for maybe 1/2 hr. my eyes start watering and then get blurry until I rest and maybe vision comes back. In the afternoon they start getting blurry regardless for the whole night when I finally decide to go to sleep.

I never realized, but now my symptoms make sense. I wear prisms because of double vision, but now understand that the blurriness and tiredness are all part of MG.
