Hi Carol
Yes, I developed diabetes from prednisone. Pretty sure of that though My family was prone to it. Plus I was a sugar addict.
I've been on prednisone for 33 years. Started out with 20 mg. Went down to 10 and I've been on 5 mg for many years.
However, in 2021 I was having some medical issues and they took me off of metformin that I use for about 25 years and I have been living without any medication for the last 4 years I'm able to keep my sugar under control just by watching what I eat.
You got to stay away from sugar, starches and carbs.
That means no flour, no sugar, no pasta, no rice, very little dairy.
I do eat fruit mostly berries which are low glycemic index.
The dues are proteins, meats, eggs and non-starchy vegetables 🥒🍆
It's possible.
Prednisone will elevate blood sugar
My blood sugar has been rising since I was started on prednisone, 30 mg. A1C went from 6 to 9 in 1 month. I've had 2 Hep B vaccinations and will wean off prednisone after starting Cellcept in April. They sent me Metformin but I haven't been home for a month so haven't started that, probably won't even after I get home. I have cut back the prednisone to 20 mg. per day. My finger sticks have been steady at 140 fasting. Blood pressure has been very normal, so that hasn't been affected. Getting a one scan next month to set a baseline because bone loss is another side effect of prednisone. Best course for the diabetes is to go keto.
Yes I was one that ended up with pre diabetes but thankfully I was aware of the signs and symptoms and my Dr started to wean me off of it and replaced it with cellcept. My symptoms of previous diabetes have gone away just waiting on next blood tests…..scary!
Has prednisone caused diabetes for you or others with MG?
You're absolutely right that prednisone can be incredibly effective for MG while also bringing challenging side effects. Research shows that people with MG who take steroids have a 46% increased risk of developing diabetes compared to those who don't use steroids.
