Has anyone had cataract surgery with MG? Any complications? Anything I should watch out for?

I had cataract surgery just as Covid got going so 2021(?). I did not have any problems at all and the surgery went very well. However I did just find out that they are coming back. My eye Dr, who actually has experience with mg pts other than myself, says it’s fairly common for them to return with the medicine and the effects of the mg itself. I did ask if the RA had anything to do and he said more than likely a combination of both. Hope this helps.

Potential Complications:
- Myasthenic crisis (when respiratory muscles become too weak to breathe on your own)
- Worsening MG symptoms after surgery
- Complications from anesthesia
- Increased risk if you've stopped MG treatments for the procedure or develop an infection

Warning Signs to Watch For:
- Feeling short of breath
- Trouble swallowing
- Increased muscle weakness

These symptoms need immediate medical attention.

How to Prepare:
Make sure your surgical team knows you have MG. It's helpful to request a team experienced with MG patients, as they'll take extra precautions before, during, and after surgery.

Have a presurgery discussion with both your surgeon and anesthesiologist about your condition and current treatments.

Important Note About Eye Health:
Long-term use of prednisone and other corticosteroids can actually contribute to cataracts and glaucoma, so regular eye exams are important when living with MG.

I have cataracts but am told there not ripe yet

I had both eyes done . No problems with MG. I do feel it best to talk to your doctor. Also make sure the optometrist Anesthesiology all know you have MG .Best wishes. I am sure you will do fine.
