Hi Roberta!
Just make sure that you tell them
that you have myasthenia gravis.
I know many years ago when I was diagnosed we couldn't have novocaine. I don't know if that's changed.
Anyway, good luck on your visit. I always hate going to the dentist. It's never fun. So good luck ๐
Have a good rest of your day

Is lidocaine (local anesthesia) safe for dental appointments with myasthenia gravis, and could it cause throat closure?
Local anesthesia like lidocaine used at the dentist is generally considered safer for people with MG compared to general anesthesia. Local anesthetics work by blocking pain signals in a specific area without affecting your entire body or breathing muscles.
The main concerns with anesthesia and MG involve medications that relax skeletal muscles throughout the body, particularly those used during surgery with general anesthesia. These can interfere with breathing and muscle function in ways that are more risky for someone with MG.
For your dental appointment, here are some important steps:
- Inform your dentist about your MG diagnosis before the appointment
- Let them know all medications you're currently taking
- Ask if they have experience treating patients with MG
- Discuss any concerns about the specific anesthetic they plan to use
Your throat closing is unlikely with local dental anesthesia, but it's important to communicate any unusual symptoms during or after the procedure. The dental team can monitor you and adjust their approach if needed.
If you're feeling anxious about the appointment, consider having your neurologist communicate with your dentist beforehand to ensure everyone is on the same page about your care.

I'm so glad you didn't have any problems. Yeah whenever I go to the dentist I use lidocaine as well. I've always told him no novocaine. I don't really know what the difference is. I just say it because I read it many years ago and I didn't want to take a chance. Awesome! I'm glad you got through your appointment. I hope you have a good evening. Take care

Well I had my dentist appointment today and i said not to use novacaine...he asked why? I told him its not recommended if you have MG. He said he knows what mg is.
I trust that he used lidocaine and it wasn't a problem. Was there for 2 hours glad i made it through....so tired.
