What is a myasthenic crisis?

It sounds like you might be asking about a myasthenic crisis rather than a "sleep crisis." A myasthenic crisis is a serious, life-threatening emergency where the muscles involved in breathing and swallowing become severely weak.

This is different from a cholinergic crisis, which can happen if you take too high a dose of MG medication. Both can cause breathing difficulties, but they have different causes and treatments.

What triggers a myasthenic crisis?

Various factors can trigger one, including:
- Menstrual cycle changes
- Pregnancy
- Sleep deprivation
- Surgery or pain
- Extreme temperatures
- Medication changes
- Certain antibiotics or vaccinations
- Emotional distress

Interestingly, no specific trigger is found in 30-40% of cases.

What are the symptoms?

Watch for:
- Severe shortness of breath
- Difficulty swallowing
- Drowsiness
- Extreme weakness

If you experience these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. You may need mechanical ventilation support until your symptoms improve.

About 10% of people with MG experience a myasthenic crisis at some point, and it requires immediate hospital care.

I had that Myasthenia sleep crisis 3xs last year and I believe it was due to the extreme high temps in the summer. I had all the symptoms and the first 2xs I went to er they gave me oxygen, a banana bag, put me in darkness and I slept for a cpl hours. Then sent me home. The 3rd time wasn't as bad so I opted to stay home. I felt better after while. But I had the weakness in my chest where I couldn't take a full breath for a few days.
I am not advocating to stay home. That was my choice and it worked out for me.

Stay hopeful 😎
