What is Vyvgart treatment for myasthenia gravis?
Vyvgart (efgartigimod alfa-fcab) is a targeted therapy called an FcRn blocker that works by lowering levels of harmful antibodies in your body. These antibodies interfere with communication between nerves and muscles, causing the muscle weakness and fatigue you experience with MG.
The medication is currently FDA-approved for adults with generalized myasthenia gravis who test positive for acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. About 80% of people with MG have these antibodies.
Expanding treatment options
Recent research shows promising results for people who are seronegative—meaning they test negative for AChR antibodies but may have other antibodies like MuSK or LRP4, or no detectable antibodies at all (triple seronegative). A Phase 3 trial found that Vyvgart improved daily function for people with seronegative MG, which could expand treatment options for those who previously had limited therapy choices.
The manufacturer plans to apply for FDA approval to expand access for people with seronegative MG by the end of 2025. If approved, Vyvgart could become the only FcRn blocker available for these subtypes, filling an important treatment gap.
