What causes myasthenia gravis (MG)?
MG is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells. Specifically, abnormal antibodies attack and destroy acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) at the neuromuscular junction where nerves and muscles connect. This disrupts normal muscle function, leading to weakness. Several risk factors may contribute to developing MG:
• Genetics - While not directly hereditary, certain HLA genes can increase susceptibility
• Environmental triggers including:
- Physical trauma
- Emotional stress
- Infections
- Pregnancy
- Certain medications
- Surgery
- Allergic reactions
Additionally, about 15% of people with MG have a thymus tumor (thymoma), which may contribute to the condition's development.
