Does pyridostigmine (Mestinon) get processed through the liver?
Yes, pyridostigmine is processed by the liver. Since you have fatty liver concerns, it's really important to discuss this with your doctor before starting or continuing this medication.
Your healthcare provider may want to:
- Monitor your liver function with blood tests
- Adjust your dosage if needed
- Consider how your liver condition might affect how the medication works
Pyridostigmine is commonly used to help with muscle weakness in myasthenia gravis by slowing down the breakdown of acetylcholine, which helps nerves communicate with muscles.
Because everyone's situation is different, especially with liver concerns, your neurologist or MG specialist should evaluate whether pyridostigmine is still the right choice for you or if any adjustments are needed. Don't stop taking it without talking to your doctor first, as sudden changes can affect your MG symptoms.

Absorption of medication in our system is key.
Changing my diet and finding out which foods are good and which aren't is detrimental. I have 2 cysts on my liver. One shrank and the other was always small. The nurse told me people get them all the time. 🙄 not much else.
I wanted to know what I could do to make my body function better under my current circumstances and then try to do my best to change what I can. The resource tab is very helpful.
Stay hopeful 😎
