Yes, wearing masks during cold and flu season is highly recommended for people with myasthenia gravis. Respiratory infections can trigger myasthenic crisis, a severe condition where breathing becomes severely impaired and may require mechanical ventilation.

The most common triggers for myasthenic crisis include:
β€’ Bacterial pneumonia
β€’ Upper respiratory infections
β€’ Influenza (flu)
β€’ COVID-19 To protect yourself, it's important to:
β€’ Stay up to date with vaccinations
β€’ Monitor for any breathing difficulties
β€’ Seek immediate medical care if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or worsening muscle weakness

Wearing a mask adds an extra layer of protection against respiratory infections that could potentially trigger serious MG complications.

Big YES from me too! My immune system is suppressed from several meds. I wear a mask during fall/winter or if I am going to be in a closed space with lots of people. I already got my flu shot & am getting my covid vaccine tomorrow. I used to get really sick during the winter but mask wearing has prevented that knock on wood!πŸͺ΅ ✊🏻
