The diagnostic process for MG is focused on confirming MG and ruling out other conditions, rather than diagnosing other diseases. Testing typically includes blood work for antibodies, nerve tests to check muscle-nerve communication, and imaging of the thymus gland.
A key finding is that brain MRI results in people with MG are usually normal, since MG affects the neuromuscular junction rather than causing brain damage. If an MRI shows certain abnormalities, doctors would likely investigate other potential causes of symptoms. The most important diagnostic tools for MG include:
- Blood tests to check for MG antibodies
- Nerve tests to evaluate nerve-muscle signaling
- Imaging tests to examine the thymus gland
- Ice pack test for eye-related symptoms
Getting an accurate diagnosis from a neurologist is crucial since proper treatment depends on correct identification of MG versus other conditions.
